The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has said President Bola Tinubu remains composed despite threats from U.S. President Donald Trump concerning Nigeria’s security situation.
Idris made this known after meeting with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. He explained that the President is fully committed to strengthening national security and ensuring safety for all Nigerians, regardless of tribe, religion, or background.
“Mr President is calm and focused. He is assessing the situation carefully and working to ensure the international community understands Nigeria’s efforts,” Idris said.
He noted that President Tinubu recently restructured the leadership of the armed forces to enhance the nation’s security architecture, reflecting his determination to protect all citizens.
The minister added that the government has opened communication channels with global partners to clarify its security actions and reassure the international community of Nigeria’s commitment to peace.
Addressing concerns about religious divisions, Idris said the government continues to engage religious leaders to promote unity and tolerance. He dismissed allegations that the administration supports violence against any faith group.
He emphasised that Nigeria is a nation founded on freedom of worship and that the constitution guarantees every citizen the right to practise their religion without interference.
Idris urged Nigerians to unite, avoid divisive rhetoric, and focus on national development. “Mr President is calm but serious about the situation. Those responsible are handling it with utmost care and responsibility,” he added.
His comments followed Trump’s post on Truth Social on Saturday, in which the U.S. President claimed that Christianity was under threat in Nigeria and directed the Pentagon to plan possible military action.
Trump repeated his threat on Sunday, suggesting potential air strikes or troop deployment if the alleged killings of Christians continued — remarks that have sparked widespread reactions across political and diplomatic circles.
