Tinubu means well, but intentionality is key – Fayemi

Former Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, has stated that while President Bola Tinubu has good intentions with his policies, well-meaning alone is insufficient for effective leadership.

The ex-governor, who referred to Tinubu as his elder brother, emphasised the need for a policy framework that aligns with strong leadership skills to bring about the desired change for Nigerians.

“He (Tinubu) is well-meaning, but well-meaning is not enough in leadership; intentionality is critical to success,” the All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain said on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Thursday.

Challenges in Governance

Fayemi, a senior member of the president’s party and a close ally, noted that while those in power often know the truth, they may fail to act upon it due to various obstacles.

He acknowledged Tinubu’s boldness in tackling difficult decisions that past leaders had avoided, stating:

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has made significant decisions, and we must all acknowledge that. He has taken on some of the most difficult challenges that previous administrations were reluctant to face.

“However, the consequences of these decisions, such as the removal of fuel subsidies and the convergence of foreign exchange rates, have led to a severe cost-of-living crisis.”

Call for a Stronger Policy Framework

Fayemi pointed out that while some government initiatives, such as student loans, security measures, and tax reforms, are commendable, they need to be properly coordinated.

“This is where an effective policy framework must go hand in hand with leadership acumen to change the current narrative. Perhaps this is the area where more work is needed,” he concluded.
