10

Social media has been buzzing following widespread reactions to a controversial video featuring Islamic cleric Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir delivering remarks concerning religious politics and a Muslim-Muslim ticket, with Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf reportedly in attendance.

In part he said, “If not for the Muslim-Muslim ticket, Christians in Nigeria would think they are more than us.

This is why we must make sure the Muslim-Muslim ticket continues to succeed, so that our dominance remains sustained.”

The video sparked intense online outrage and debate among Nigerians, with many condemning the rhetoric as divisive and dangerous to national unity, while discussions centered on the secular nature of Nigeria, leadership accountability, and the intersection of religion and politics.

Here are some of the reactions from social media users:

Femi Fani-Kayode (@realFFK): I have immense respect for Sheik Jingir but I am constrained to point out that the extremist rhetoric he has indulged in here is most unhelpful and neither is it true. Worse of all is the fact that it is highly provocative. Kindly take note that it is a very slippery and dangerous slope to take and is best avoided. Nigeria is NOT a Muslim country and neither is she a Christian country. She is a SECULAR and MULTI-RELIGIOUS state comprising of BOTH Christians and Muslims in equal numbers and that is our strength. We are supporting a Muslim/Muslim ticket for 2027, as we did in 2023, only because of the calibre, ability, sincerity of purpose, character, utility and electoral strength of our Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates and their ability to deliver and not because they are Muslims. One day we may have a Christian/Christian ticket too because with God all things are possible. Let us leave religion out of politics and consider issues, policies and personalities instead. The Christian community has fared very well in Nigeria in the last three years under this Government and far better than they did between 2015 and 2023 even though at that time we had a Muslim/Christian ticket. We must not allow this issue to divide our ranks. We are NIGERIANS before being Christian or Muslim and we must not only stand as ONE but also go to the polls as ONE. We overcame religious intolerance in 2023 and won the presidential election and by God’s grace we will do the same again in 2027.

NEFERTITI (@firstladyship): It’s no longer news that Muslim Muslim ticket is being sponsored or promoted by those who seek to divide Nigerians along religious lines. But seeing the governor of a state among the crowd that clapped & rejoiced while a religious bigot preached the most provocative form of hatred against Christians, was an eyesore. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State endorsed the hateful extremist remarks from Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir. He rejoiced at it.

Mallam jabir (@Mallam_jabe…): Religion must never become a weapon against our unity. The words of Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir in this video are deeply troubling gaskiya. Shouting Muslim-Muslim referring to others as infidels and using language that creates fear, division and intimidation is not the kind of message Nigeria needs from religious leaders.

Daniel Uche (@danieliuche): Who noticed the shame on the faces of the people there even though their one term Governor is laughing at the inciting comments. What manner of religious leaders do we have in Nigeria. Shameful lots

Frederick Akuba (@Frederick…): Some people like this Islamic sheikh is the reason Nigeria is not moving forward, their agenda is clear, Islamized everybody, the only way out is to divide Nigeria in 3 regions, the Eastern region continues with their Christianity, the Northern region Islam west half, half.

K B A (@kbalmustapha): The imam represents his own political views and aspirations, he doesn’t speak for Muslims or Islam at large. As Muslim I’m totally embarrassed by this loose statement which have been the reason our country still can’t develop as it should. Disappointed indeed by this

Nero (@Ndubuisi_23): That’s a sheikh, an Islamic leader and preacher. I suppose he is a similar figure to a Christian priest. Here, he is openly supporting Tinubu’s Muslim-Muslim ticket drive and being partisan to a fault. Where are the likes of Daniel Bwala, Bayo Onanuga, and those APC guys who berated and accused Cardinal Onaiyekan of being partisan?

Peace James (@PeaceJames8…): E go soon clear for these old idiots ! 2026 isn’t 1966(60years ago)! The Israel of 1948 to date isn’t the Israel that was bullied over the ages! These delusional men feel we’re in that era! No country survives civil war twice! Probably he’s giving everyone the easier route

Ugoh Benjamin Emmanuel (@…): Most religious in our country never gathered to talk about manufacturing things, they only talk about how to multiply their numbers by all means possible

unruly (@InvadeYrPrivacy): We will all share the consequences equally when the yawa burst. If you think bcos you are Muslim, the Arabs will recognise you and pardon you, you are lying to yourself. There will be no escape for ALL OF US..
