Residents of Ijebu Ode were thrown into panic on Thursday after a suspected gas leak or chemical odour reportedly affected several secondary schools, leaving more than 90 students and teachers hospitalised.

The incident, which occurred in different parts of the town, caused many students to suddenly develop symptoms including stomach pain, dizziness, nausea, breathing difficulty and weakness during school hours. Some reportedly fainted as teachers and emergency responders rushed to evacuate affected schools.

Schools said to have been affected include Anglican Girls Grammar School, Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School, Ijebu Ode Grammar School and Adeola Odutola Secondary School.

Eyewitnesses said panic spread quickly among parents and residents as students were hurriedly moved out of classrooms and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Officials of the Ogun State Government confirmed that emergency response teams and environmental agencies were deployed to the area following reports of a strange odour in parts of the town.

According to preliminary findings, air quality monitoring reportedly detected elevated methane levels, although authorities stated that the concentration was below explosive limits. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact source of the suspected leak.

Security operatives and health officials were also mobilised to maintain order and assist affected residents.

The Nigeria Police Force appealed to residents to remain calm, assuring the public that the situation was under control while emergency assessments continue.

As of the time of filing this report, many of the affected students and teachers were said to be responding to treatment.
