US President-elect Donald Trump has appointed right-wing Florida lawmaker Matt Gaetz as his Attorney General, recognising the loyalty of a steadfast ally who has staunchly defended him through legal challenges and impeachment proceedings.

“Few issues in America are more important than ending the partisan weaponisation of our justice system,” Trump wrote on social media. “Matt will put an end to weaponised government and restore Americans’ badly shattered faith and confidence in the Justice Department.”
