Two female students of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, have regained their freedom after they were abducted during the killing of a branch bank manager on the university campus last Sunday.
The university’s Public Relations Officer, Orakwe Ezugwu, confirmed their release in a statement made available to journalists on Friday.
Ezugwu said the students were currently receiving medical treatment and psychological support at the University Medical Centre.
He added that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Ikechukwu Dozie, had visited the students and interacted with them following their release.
“The Management of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, has confirmed the safe release of the two female students who were abducted during the gruesome killing of a branch bank manager, Mr Ossy, last Sunday,” the statement read.
The university management commended the Nigerian Police and other security agencies for what it described as their prompt intervention in securing the students’ release.
Ezugwu said the university community remained safe, adding that additional security measures were being sustained in collaboration with relevant security agencies.
“The management assures students, staff, parents, and the University community that additional security measures are being sustained in collaboration with relevant security agencies,” he said.
He urged members of the university community to remain calm and vigilant and to report suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.

The students were abducted during the incident in which an Owerri-based branch manager of Polaris Bank, identified as Mr Ossy, was shot dead by gunmen after reportedly resisting an attempt to kidnap him.
The bank manager had reportedly gone to the university campus to drop off his children when the incident occurred.
