The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Offiong Offiong, has warned that “over-admission” will no longer be tolerated under his leadership.
Offiong made the statement on Thursday while speaking to journalists ahead of the university’s 38th convocation ceremony in Calabar. He said the administration has implemented strict measures to “sanitise the admission process,” affirming that only students within the institution’s approved carrying capacity will be admitted.
“We have begun with some preliminary measures to sanitise the admission process. Let me state clearly, no more over-admission,” he said.
He urged parents, guardians, and prospective students not to pressure the university for admission into competitive courses such as Medicine, Pharmacy, and Nursing, where slots are limited. “Please, when you are told there is no space in Medicine and Surgery, Pharmacy or Nursing, do not insist. We will not indulge in over-admission,” Offiong added.
The Vice-Chancellor also noted that the “Central Admissions Committee” has been restored to ensure transparency and due process.
He warned the public against offering or accepting bribes to secure admission or employment, emphasizing that “every admission and employment process will be strictly based on merit and due process.”
Offiong further disclosed that the university is investigating cases of certificate racketeering and forgery, with some computer centres allegedly producing fake documents using the institution’s name. Those involved will be exposed and prosecuted.
Regarding the convocation, he said 10,820 students will graduate, including 52 first-class degree holders and 463 PhD graduands. Activities from April 7 to April 12, 2026, will include an interdenominational service, research fair, convocation lecture, award of degrees, and a grand finale thanksgiving service.
He highlighted that the ceremony, the first under his leadership, will showcase the university’s research output and ongoing reforms.
Offiong reiterated his administration’s commitment to transparency, academic excellence, and institutional integrity, and appealed for continued support from stakeholders and the media to drive UNICAL’s transformation agenda.
