Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on Wednesday, inaugurated the upgrade of Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport in Alakia, Ibadan, to international standards.
He emphasized that once completed, the project will connect Oyo State to global markets, enhance the ease of doing business, and attract investments in key sectors like agribusiness, manufacturing, and technology, positioning Ibadan as a regional business hub.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Makinde revealed that the project, awarded to Craneburg at a cost of N41 billion, is expected to be completed within 12 months. He assured the public that his administration is committed to ensuring timely delivery.
Makinde also addressed the newly passed Presumptive Tax Law, reassuring residents that despite its passage by the State House of Assembly, it would not be enforced immediately due to the current economic hardships. He emphasized his administration’s focus on alleviating poverty, not punishing citizens.
Highlighting the strategic importance of upgrading the airport, Makinde said the decision was based on data and logic, aimed at boosting economic development through improved infrastructure. He noted that the first phase of the project includes upgrading the runway, airfield lighting, and critical facilities, while the second phase will focus on the terminal.
Additionally, the governor praised the construction firm, Craneburg, for their previous work on the Circular Road and the Alao-Akala Memorial Highway, expressing confidence in their ability to deliver this project on time and within budget.
During the event, Makinde also acknowledged Deputy Governor Barr. Lawal for his leadership while the governor was on vacation and commended the residents of Oyo State for their support.
In his remarks, Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, praised Makinde for his vision and commitment to developing Oyo State, while Air Commodore Victor Ajiboye of the Nigerian Air Force assured that the completed project would boost Ibadan’s role as an economic hub in the South-West.
The event drew a host of dignitaries, including top government officials, members of the National Assembly, traditional rulers, and representatives from the aviation sector, who all lauded the governor’s initiative to transform the airport after four decades of existence.
