Why Police officers were at Rivers assembly quarters – Commissioner Disu

The Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Olatunji Disu, provided insight into the presence of police officers at the Rivers State House of Assembly Quarters in Port Harcourt.

Disu clarified the situation in an exclusive interview with Channels Television, stating that the police were stationed at the Quarters solely to prevent any potential breach of law and order.

This clarification came in response to allegations that police officers had taken control of the assembly quarters amidst the ongoing leadership dispute in the assembly.

According to DAILY POST, members of the Nigeria Police Force had assumed control of the entrance and exit points of the Rivers State House of Assembly complex on Friday. Around 30 policemen had gathered at the first and second gates of the lawmakers’ estate, while approximately 25 patrol vans were utilized to block the remaining entrances.

This development occurred shortly after the embattled Speaker of the House, Martins Amaewhule, accused Governor Sim Fubara of planning to demolish the legislative quarters.

However, the Commissioner stated that contrary to reports of a significant police presence at the Assembly quarters, only four patrol vehicles were stationed there.

Disu explained that the command had not yet received official notification from the court regarding the interim order restraining lawmakers supportive of Governor Wike from assuming their roles as legislators.
