The governor of Kano state, Abba Yusuf, has cautioned social media influencers and political commentators to desist from making disrespectful or provocative statements about Rabiu Kwankwaso, the national leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).
The warning followed the recent resignation of the Kano governor from the NNPP alongside 21 members of the Kano state house of assembly, eight members of the house of representatives, and all 44 local government chairpersons in the state.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Bature Dawakin Tofa, spokesperson to the governor, said the caution was delivered during the presentation of 600 motorcycles to social media influencers in Kano.
Yusuf warned that abusing social media platforms to spread insults, false information, or hate speech could undermine peace and unity across the state.
According to the spokesperson, the governor described Kwankwaso as a leader whose role in the political and socio-economic development of Kano state is significant and worthy of respect.
He stressed that freedom of expression should be exercised with responsibility, noting that political discussions should focus on issues and constructive engagement rather than personal attacks.
Yusuf also advised the beneficiaries of the motorcycles to see the gesture as a duty to promote truth, peace, and accurate information about government programmes and activities.
He added that the initiative was aimed at empowering social media practitioners to enhance public awareness and strengthen communication between the government and the people.
