Dramatic late leveller from Tammy Abraham earned Aston Villa a 1-1 stalemate with a well-organised Leeds United at Villa Park, although the home side surrendered their flawless EPL record against teams that began the day 14th or lower in the table.

Reaching the 50-point mark at this stage of a Premier League season for only the third time in their history — and doing so despite claiming just two victories from their previous five league outings Villa controlled much of the early possession as anticipated. Yet it was Leeds who nearly opened the scoring, as the in-form Dominic Calvert-Lewin surprisingly failed to trouble Emiliano Martínez in the 15th minute, badly miskicking from close range inside the six-yard area. Villa responded positively, with Emiliano Buendía dragging an effort wide from the edge of the box after Leeds failed to clear their lines.

Revitalised since early December, Leeds stood their ground and found the breakthrough shortly after the half-hour. Soon after having a shot blocked, Anton Stach channelled his inner David Beckham, curling a direct free kick from over 25 yards into Martínez’s top-left corner. The Villa Park crowd were left stunned, and it nearly became 1-1 before the interval. Douglas Luiz floated a cross toward Amadou Onana, who looked certain to score, but Karl Darlow pulled off an outstanding save to preserve the visitors’ lead heading into HT.

Given Villa’s league-best 50% win rate before the round when conceding first, that opportunity highlighted how much work Leeds still had ahead. Aside from a Buendía attempt that drifted wide immediately after the restart, Villa struggled to intensify the pressure. Unai Emery introduced Ross Barkley and Jadon Sancho to spark greater attacking impetus. However, it was Leeds substitute Lukas Nmecha who almost extended the advantage, nearly scoring with his first involvement less than a minute after entering the pitch, directing a header toward the bottom-left corner that Martínez superbly kept out.

Despite his efforts, even Villa’s standout performer Morgan Rogers couldn’t shift the momentum, as the England hopeful was effectively contained by a determined Leeds midfield. Instead, fellow Englishman Abraham delivered the equaliser in the 89th minute. From a corner, Ezri Konsa nodded the ball back across goal, allowing the striker to finish emphatically and ignite celebrations inside Villa Park — marking his second goal in as many appearances for the Villans.

The draw ensured Emery avoided what would have been his first league defeat in 19 matches against a promoted side as Villa boss. For Leeds, a second-ever Premier League double over Villa remains out of reach, but although they have managed just one win in their last 19 away games in the top flight, survival for the Whites appears to be a matter of time rather than doubt.
