Amusan breaks 25-year African 60m hurdles record

Nigerian sprinter Tobi Amusan has established a fresh African women’s 60-meter hurdles indoor record, clocking a time of 7.77 seconds.

At the Astana Indoor Meet in Kazakhstan on Saturday, Nigerian sprinter Tobi Amusan delivered an outstanding performance, setting a new African women’s 60-meter hurdles indoor record with a remarkable time of 7.77 seconds. This achievement surpasses the previous continental mark of 7.82 seconds set by fellow Nigerian Gloria Alozie in 1999.

In the 60m hurdles final, the 26-year-old sprinter secured victory, outpacing American Nia Ali and Ireland’s Sarah Lavin.

This event marked Nigeria’s inaugural race of the 2023 athletic season, following Amusan’s eventful conclusion to the previous year.

She faced a provisional suspension before the World Championships due to missed drug tests but was subsequently cleared.

Despite failing to defend her 100m hurdles world title and finishing sixth in Budapest, Amusan concluded the year on a high note by securing her third consecutive Diamond League trophy.

Her new 60m hurdles record further solidifies Amusan’s status as a trailblazer for African female sprint hurdlers.

In 2022, she achieved the historic feat of becoming the first Nigerian to secure a gold medal at the World Athletics Championship. Additionally, she shattered the women’s 100m hurdles world record on her way to this remarkable triumph.
