Arne Slot has expressed his desire to succeed Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool’s manager at the season’s end.

Liverpool initiated discussions with Feyenoord on Wednesday regarding the possible appointment of Slot.

Before Feyenoord’s 3-1 league win over Go Ahead Eagles on Thursday, the Dutchman affirmed his interest in the position to ESPN.

“It seems clear to me that I would like to work there,” Slot said.

“All I can say about it is that the clubs are in negotiations. I’m in the waiting room.”

He mentioned that he was “confident” that Liverpool and Feyenoord would be able to come to an agreement.

Slot, 45, has led Feyenoord to the 2022-23 Eredivisie championship and this season’s Dutch Cup. He has also been previously considered by Tottenham Hotspur and Leeds United.

If Liverpool decides to appoint Slot, they will need to negotiate a transfer fee with Feyenoord, as his contract does not have a release clause that can be activated this summer. A release clause is included, but it will not be available until the following year.

On Wednesday, Liverpool’s captain Virgil van Dijk praised Slot’s coaching style, stating that it would be a good fit for the club and describing him as “one of the better Dutch coaches at the moment.”

The attacking play style of Slot’s teams, along with his personality and proven ability to develop players, are believed to be key reasons he is Liverpool’s top choice for manager.

Slot took the helm at Feyenoord in 2021 and expressed his interest in managing in the Premier League when he was linked with Spurs in 2023.

Xabi Alonso, also considered for the Anfield position, declared in March that he would stay with Bayer Leverkusen, and Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim was rumored to be another candidate.

Jurgen Klopp, who has led the Reds since October 2015, announced in January that he would step down at the end of the season.
