Noni Madueke proved an ideal deputy for the injured Bukayo Saka, delivering an outstanding display as Arsenal cruised to a 4-0 victory at Leeds and extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to seven points.

After Manchester City and Aston Villa had capitalised on Arsenal’s recent slip to narrow the gap, the Gunners responded in style at Elland Road on Saturday.

Madueke was the standout performer in the opening half, drafted into the starting XI at the last minute after Saka was hurt during the warm-up.

The winger delivered a superb cross for Martin Zubimendi to nod home the opener in the 27th minute, following a recycled set-piece by Declan Rice on his 300th Premier League appearance.

Madueke was again involved for the second goal 11 minutes later, as his corner caused chaos. With Dominic Calvert-Lewin challenging him, Karl Darlow punched the ball onto his near post and into his own net.

Viktor Gyokeres, who had earlier been denied in a one-on-one by an excellent Joe Rodon block, ended his goal drought with a scrappy finish in the 69th minute, his first since mid-December.

Substitute Gabriel Jesus rounded off the scoring late on, holding off Pascal Struijk before slotting a low effort into the bottom-right corner with four minutes left.

Leeds endured a difficult afternoon, rarely threatening the league leaders, and stay 16th in the table, six points clear of the relegation zone.

With their advantage at the summit reduced, Mikel Arteta was well aware of the need for Arsenal to reassert themselves in the title race.

They returned to familiar strengths. Arsenal have now scored more goals from corners (14) than any other Premier League side this season, and no team has more headed goals than their 10 (level with Tottenham).

This was also the fifth occasion they have scored at least four times away against Leeds. Arsenal exceeded their 2.39 expected goals (xG) from 14 shots, while Leeds managed just 0.15 xG.

Gyokeres’ strike was another significant moment. He has four goals in his last six appearances across all competitions and now stands as Arsenal’s leading scorer this season with 11 goals.
