Chelsea claim stunning comeback victory as half-time substitutes inspire Liam

Liam Rosenior’s tactical tweaks at the interval transformed a struggling Chelsea side, as they rallied from two goals down to claim a remarkable 3-2 victory over West Ham.

Fresh from an eye-catching midweek triumph in Naples that secured qualification for the Champions League last 16, the reigning world champions rotated heavily. Rosenior made seven alterations to his starting lineup, but the decision backfired as a ruthless West Ham side punished them on the break.

Jarrod Bowen and Crysencio Summerville struck either side of half-time to put the visitors 2-0 ahead at the interval. However, the introduction of Joao Pedro, Wesley Fofana and Marc Cucurella after the break changed the complexion of the contest, with Enzo Fernandez ultimately sealing the comeback deep into stoppage time.

With Tuesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final against Arsenal in mind, the wholesale changes handed chances to several fringe players and allowed Cole Palmer to return to the starting XI. Instead of staking their claims, Chelsea looked disjointed and were caught cold early on when Bowen’s delivery from the right drifted past everyone and crept into the far corner.

West Ham doubled their advantage soon after. Bowen and Aaron Wan-Bissaka linked up smartly before the latter picked out Summerville centrally, who rifled home his third goal in consecutive matches.

The half-time whistle was met by loud jeers, with tensions spilling over as goalkeeper Robert Sanchez appeared to exchange words with angry supporters while heading down the tunnel.

Rosenior reacted decisively. Having already introduced Pedro Neto for the injured Jamie Gittens before the break, he took further risks by sending on Pedro, Fofana and Cucurella — moves that paid immediate dividends.

Fofana delivered a pinpoint cross that Pedro nodded in to reduce the deficit, and inside 15 minutes Chelsea were level. Cucurella followed up to head home after Liam Delap struck the bar from point-blank range.

The renewed energy lifted the crowd, who roared their team forward in search of a winner. After Jean-Clair Todibo rattled the post at the opposite end, Chelsea finally found the breakthrough.

Fernandez, the lone starter who consistently posed a threat, struck a dramatic winner in stoppage time to ignite scenes of celebration at Stamford Bridge.

The match concluded in chaos as Todibo was dismissed after clashing with Pedro, sparking a melee between both sides and bringing a turbulent yet thrilling Premier League encounter to an ugly end.
