Barcelona, PSG boycott TV network over Yamal remark

Barcelona and Paris St-Germain declined to participate in interviews with a television broadcaster following a contentious remark made about Lamine Yamal prior to their Champions League match.

German Burgos, employed by the Spanish TV network Movistar, made the comment while discussing Barcelona winger Yamal’s kick-ups during a segment.

Burgos is reported to have said: “If it doesn’t go well for him, he could end up at a traffic light.”

He has apologised for the comment.

The remark, which has been interpreted as a reference to people who perform at traffic lights and ask drivers for money, came before Barcelona’s quarter-final first-leg win against PSG on Wednesday.

“It was a comment made without meaning to hurt anyone. We talk about football, nothing else. If he felt offended, I am sorry and I apologise publicly,” said Burgos.

Burgos, aged 54, amassed 35 caps for Argentina throughout his playing career and spent six years in Spain, representing clubs such as Mallorca and Atletico Madrid.

Movistar stated that they “condemn” the comments made and are committed to taking “appropriate measures” to prevent any recurrence in the future.

Yamal, aged 16, was born in Spain to parents of Moroccan and Equatorial Guinean descent.

The winger, who has already earned six caps for Spain, achieved the distinction of being the youngest player to feature in a Champions League quarter-final during the victory in Paris.
