Bayelsa Queens win the NWFL championship in grand style
Bayelsa Queens were crowned champions of the 2021/2022 Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) after defeating Nasarawa Amazons 2-1 in the Super Six playoff.
They won all five playoff matches at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, Edo State, to become the shortened season champions.
Monday Gift scored a pair of goals during the game, the first of which was scored in 25 seconds, making it the quickest goal in the 2021/2022 NWFL Premiership Super League.
Despite Basirat Amoo’s equaliser in the sixteenth minute, Monday’s goal nine minutes later gave the four-time champions the coveted trophy.
They took home N5 million in prize money and will now represent Nigeria in the CAF Women’s Champions League next season.
Monday Gift, the team’s key woman, claimed the Golden Boot prize. She scored 12 goals in five matches.
She also won the Player of the Season award.
