Bayern Munich are in advanced discussions with Burnley regarding the surprising appointment of Vincent Kompany as their new head coach.
The Bundesliga club believes Kompany is interested in joining them, and both clubs are working towards agreeing on a compensation fee.
Kompany, 38, is expected to bring his Burnley backroom staff with him to Munich, including former Wales international Craig Bellamy.
Bayern have been struggling to find a replacement for Thomas Tuchel, whose departure was confirmed last week after being initially announced in February.
Candidates such as Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso, Germany’s head coach Julian Nagelsmann, and current Austria coach Ralf Rangnick have all declined the position.
Efforts to persuade Tuchel to stay on were unsuccessful, leaving Bayern in a difficult situation.
Kompany has earned a solid reputation during his time at Anderlecht and Burnley, despite the Clarets’ relegation following high pre-season expectations, which has somewhat tarnished his record.
He speaks German, having played in the Bundesliga for Hamburg.
Kompany signed a five-year contract extension with Burnley in 2023 but avoided answering questions about his future after Sunday’s home defeat by Nottingham Forest.
A four-time Premier League winner as a player with Manchester City, Kompany became Burnley manager in June 2022, marking his first managerial role in England after previously managing Anderlecht.
Burnley minority shareholder and former NFL player JJ Watt posted a cryptic message on X on Wednesday night, saying: “People often ask if European football ownership helps fill the adrenaline void from playing…
“There are definitely days.”
