Burnley defeat Sheffield to regain top spot

Burnley returned to the top of the Championship after defeating Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

Goals from Jaidon Anthony and captain Josh Brownhill, scored either side of halftime, secured three points for Scott Parker’s side, who are now unbeaten in their last seven league matches.

The Clarets will remain at the summit of the table by the end of the weekend if Sunderland fails to beat Hull City on Sunday.

Sheffield Wednesday drops to 18th place, just three points above the relegation zone.

Just three minutes into the match, summer signing Zian Flemming came close for the visitors, but his shot was expertly saved by Wednesday goalkeeper James Beadle.

The hosts began to find their rhythm and almost broke through Burnley’s defense, but a fantastic last-ditch effort from Chelsea loanee Bashir Humphreys denied Wednesday’s Djeidi Gassama a clear goalscoring chance.

On the half-hour mark, Wednesday captain Barry Bannan sent a precise free-kick into the Burnley box, but Ike Ugbo headed over the bar when he should have done better.

Olof Kobacki showcased excellent footwork to create space for a shot, but his low effort was saved by Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford. Three minutes later, the hosts were punished for their missed chances.

A long ball from Burnley defender CJ Egan-Riley was not cleared by full-back Yan Valery, allowing Anthony to capitalize and slip the ball past Beadle for his first goal for Burnley since joining on a season-long loan from Bournemouth.

Five minutes into the second half, Burnley doubled their lead when Brownhill reacted quickly to volley home a left-footed shot in front of the traveling supporters after Flemming’s initial effort was saved.

Anthony then nearly added a third, but Beadle saved his free-kick, and substitute Jeremy Sarmiento could only hit the post with his header from the rebound.

Late in the game, Svante Ingelsson almost reduced the deficit for the hosts, but he directed his header straight at Trafford as Burnley held on for a comfortable three points.
