The president of the Confederation of African Football, Patrice Motsepe, was in Dakar on Wednesday, nearly a month after the body’s controversial decision to strip Senegal of its AFCON title and award it to Morocco.
Motsepe had announced the trip at the end of March, saying he would visit both countries to stress the need for collaboration in developing African football, amid mounting criticism of CAF.
He is scheduled to meet Bassirou Diomaye Faye at the presidential palace, with a press conference expected afterwards.
The visit comes at a tense moment following CAF’s decision to overturn Senegal’s 1-0 victory over Morocco in the Africa Cup of Nations final on January 18.
CAF cited competition regulations concerning leaving the pitch when it awarded Morocco a 3-0 win on March 17.
During the match in Rabat, Senegalese players, alongside head coach Pape Thiaw and his staff, walked off after Morocco were granted a stoppage-time penalty, which was missed by Brahim Diaz.
The Senegalese Football Federation has since appealed the ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
The decision has triggered a strong backlash in Senegal, with the government calling for an international probe into alleged corruption within CAF.
Speaking on the issue last month, Motsepe said he would respect and implement the outcome of the CAS ruling, adding that his personal views on the matter were not relevant.
