Coventry City staged a thrilling second-half comeback to avenge their Championship play-off final loss to Luton Town from 17 months prior.

In their first clash since that decisive day at Wembley in May 2023, Coventry, under pressure manager Mark Robins, found themselves down 2-0 at halftime. Luton’s opener came from a controversial Carlton Morris penalty, followed by a well-taken goal from Elijah Adebayo.

Coventry fought back with Ellis Simms pulling one back, substitute Victor Torp leveling with a spectacular left-footed strike, and Haji Wright securing an injury-time winner.

Luton’s troubles compounded as Tom Holmes received a red card in added time for a second bookable offense following a shirt pull in a game marked by six cards.

The Sky Blues started energetically, with Tatushiro Sakamoto, Josh Eccles, and Milan Van Ewijk forcing early saves, while Ben Sheaf and Simms also came close. The game took a turn when Tahith Chong’s run into the area led to a contentious penalty call from referee Bobby Madley, allowing Morris to slot in his fourth goal in four games.

Despite Coventry’s efforts, Luton extended their lead with Morris linking up with Tom Krauß, whose pass found Adebayo to score his second goal in as many games.

Facing a steep challenge at halftime, Coventry quickly responded. Though Luton’s Thomas Kaminski saved a long-range effort from Sheaf, Simms soon headed in Jack Rudoni’s corner. Eccles narrowly missed before Torp unleashed a stunning 20-yard curling shot to equalize.

With Holmes sent off in the 90th minute, Coventry seized the moment, as Wright bundled in a scrappy winner, played onside by Alfie Doughty, to secure their third league victory of the season, igniting celebrations among the 26,409 fans in attendance.
