Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has signed a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2029, the Spanish champions announced on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old Dutch international, who joined Barcelona from Ajax in 2019, is now in his seventh season with the Catalan side. During his time at the club, he has helped them win two La Liga titles and two Copa del Rey trophies.

“Barça believe the midfielder’s quality and experience make him a vital part of the club’s current sporting project,” the club said in an official statement.

De Jong, who found renewed form under manager Hansi Flick last season alongside Pedri González, expressed his joy at continuing with the team. “I always dreamed of playing for Barça, and now that I’m living that dream, I want to continue for many more years. I’m eager to win more titles,” he said during a press conference.

Reports from Spanish media indicate that De Jong, one of Barcelona’s highest earners since arriving under former president Josep Maria Bartomeu, has agreed to a salary reduction beginning with the 2026/27 season. He dismissed previous media claims about his earnings as exaggerated and damaging to his public image.

“I won’t reveal what I earn, but many of the figures reported before were greatly exaggerated,” he explained. “That’s influenced how people perceive me because when they read that I’m one of Europe’s highest-paid players, it creates an impression.”

The club previously attempted to sell De Jong in 2022 to ease financial pressure, but the midfielder insisted on staying and has since made over 250 appearances for the team.

“I’ve never felt undervalued by my teammates, coaches, or the club itself — that narrative comes more from the media,” De Jong added. “That’s the beauty of football; everyone’s entitled to their opinion.”
