Fernandez apologises on return to Chelsea’s squad

A song sung by some members of the Argentina squad featured alleged “racist and discriminatory” chants about France’s black players, according to the French Football Federation.

A complaint was lodged with world governing body FIFA, and Chelsea initiated an internal disciplinary procedure, which has now concluded.

Chelsea’s first-team squad includes seven black or mixed-race French players: Axel Disasi, Benoit Badiashile, Lesley Ugochukwu, Christopher Nkunku, Malo Gusto, and Wesley Fofana, all of whom were part of the club’s US tour.

Fofana, who has one cap for France, described the video on Instagram as showcasing “uninhibited racism.”

BBC Sport understands that several players appreciated the initial discussions, with new manager Enzo Maresca expected to confirm the imminent return of the £107m midfielder, Enzo Fernandez.

Fernandez has also offered to donate money to an anti-discrimination charity, with Chelsea matching his contribution.

Maresca, in his first press conference as manager, downplayed the situation, expressing confidence that there would be “no problems at all” upon Fernandez’s return.

Noni Madueke echoed these sentiments, saying the situation would “be fine,” while captain Reece James acknowledged it as a “problem” and expressed readiness to mediate.

An investigation by FIFA is ongoing and may involve the FA, potentially leading to a domestic match ban for Fernandez.
