Fernandez strikes late to secure point

Enzo Fernandez proved decisive for a Chelsea side without a permanent manager, as they moved on from Enzo Maresca’s exit to secure a 1-1 draw with Manchester City.

The Premier League meeting at the Etihad Stadium took place just three days after Chelsea’s surprise decision to part ways with Maresca.

With Liam Rosenior reportedly leading the race to succeed him, Calum McFarlane was handed responsibility for the visit to City, who were looking to cut into Arsenal’s lead at the top of the table.

Instead, the reigning champions now sit six points behind the Gunners after Fernandez forced the equaliser in the 94th minute.

Pep Guardiola’s side had gone ahead shortly before the break when Tijjani Reijnders smashed home a powerful left-footed strike in the 42nd minute.

Erling Haaland had earlier rattled the woodwork, and although City fashioned several encouraging opportunities after half-time, they were unable to turn pressure into a second goal.

That failure cost them late on, as a makeshift back line — unsettled further by Josko Gvardiol’s injury — failed to deal with Malo Gusto’s delivery, allowing Fernandez to score on the rebound.

Fernandez has now scored six league goals this season, matching his total from the previous campaign. While Cole Palmer struggled against his former club — registering just one shot and creating no chances — the Argentine midfielder stood out.

He attempted three shots, second only to Haaland’s five, and topped Chelsea’s charts for touches in the opposition area (four) and chances created (two).

City registered 14 attempts overall but generated just 0.99 expected goals. Chelsea, by contrast, produced 1.73 xG from only eight shots, indicating they fashioned the more dangerous opportunities.
