Xabi Alonso praised Gonzalo Garcia after describing his display as a “dream” showing during Real Madrid’s emphatic 5-1 victory over Real Betis at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday.

The 21-year-old product of the club’s academy netted a stunning hat-trick — the first goals of his LaLiga career — as Madrid reduced Barcelona’s lead at the top of the table to four points.

Alonso highlighted Gonzalo as a model for players aiming to break into the senior squad and believes the young forward’s development is far from complete.

“Gonzalo had a ‘dream’ game at the Bernabeu in his first season with us,” Alonso said.

“He really wanted to score here, and I’m delighted for him because of the effort he puts in, both on and off the field. He represents what a homegrown player should be, and he deserves praise for his performance. I want him to keep pushing.”

Alonso also emphasized Gonzalo’s understanding of modern football’s demands, particularly without the ball.

“In today’s game, collective work is essential. The way attackers start the press matters, whether it’s pressing high or combining play, and Gonzalo gets that perfectly,” he explained.

“He’s very quick, and when you combine that with his finishing and defensive contribution, he consistently improves the team.”

Gonzalo’s standout display was especially valuable with Kylian Mbappe sidelined through injury.

Asked whether Mbappe could return for Tuesday’s Supercopa de Espana semi-final against Atletico Madrid, Alonso said: “He’s not completely ruled out — we’ll see on Tuesday.”

Vinicius Jr did not register a goal or assist, but Alonso was still satisfied with the Brazilian’s impact against an outmatched Betis side.

“He gave us a lot, came into the game strongly, and forced his defender into a booking,” Alonso noted.

“He’s relentless and brings a lot to the team. I was pleased with him, and he’ll be key going forward. Next up is Atletico Madrid, and Vini will be very important again, as always.”
