Flamingos defeat Liberia, qualify for U-17 Women’s World Cup

Nigeria’s U17 girls, the Flamingos, have secured their place in the 2024 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup finals after defeating Liberia 2-0 at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja on Friday.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Nigeria had previously defeated Liberia 4-1 in Monrovia during the first leg of the final round, bringing the aggregate score to 6-1.

Chidi Harmony opened the scoring for Nigeria three minutes into the game, outplaying the Liberian defense and placing the ball beyond goalkeeper Makula Konneh following a cross from Shakirat Moshood.

Peace Effiong came close to scoring in the 17th minute, while Moshood hit the crossbar from 20 yards in the 18th minute and missed a close-range goal ten minutes before the end of the first half.

Chidi scored again in the 58th minute, taking advantage of a defensive error by Liberia and placing the ball beyond Konneh’s reach.

The 8th FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup finals will be held in the cities of Santiago de los Caballeros and Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic from October 16 to November 3.
