Ahmedabad, India, has been selected as the preferred host city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, Commonwealth Sport announced on Wednesday. The Indian city won the bid ahead of Abuja, Nigeria, to stage the centenary edition of the Games.

It will be the second time in 20 years that India will host the event, reaffirming its growing prominence in global sport.

Located in western India, Ahmedabad was chosen by the Commonwealth Sport evaluation commission, and the decision is expected to be formally approved at the organisation’s General Assembly in Glasgow on 26 November.

The city boasts the Narendra Modi Stadium — the largest in the world, with a capacity of 132,000 — which hosted the 2023 Cricket World Cup final. With a population of over five million, Ahmedabad has also been tipped as a potential future Olympic Games bidder.

Dr P. T. Usha, president of the Commonwealth Games Association of India, described the selection as a milestone moment. “The 2030 Games present a remarkable opportunity to inspire our youth, strengthen global cooperation, and build a shared future across the Commonwealth,” she said.

India previously hosted the Games in 2010 in New Delhi.

This marks the second time Abuja has been overlooked for hosting rights, having earlier lost its bid for the 2014 edition to Glasgow.
