Inter Miami coach Gerardo Martino is set to depart the MLS club due to “personal reasons,” a club source revealed to the media on Tuesday.
The former Barcelona and Argentina manager guided the team to the top of the regular-season standings this year, but their campaign ended unexpectedly with a shock defeat to Atlanta United in the first round of the playoffs.
Martino, widely referred to as “Tata,” joined Inter Miami in June 2023, coinciding with the transformative arrival of his fellow Argentine, Lionel Messi.
In his debut season, Martino led Inter Miami to victory in the Leagues Cup, a tournament featuring teams from both MLS and Mexico’s Liga MX.
This season, the club dominated the regular season, claiming the Supporters’ Shield for the best overall record. The achievement secured Miami a spot in next year’s FIFA Club World Cup.
However, their playoff journey ended prematurely with a defeat to Martino’s former side, Atlanta United, in the best-of-three opening round of the MLS Cup playoffs—a result widely considered a major upset.
The source did not elaborate on the “personal reasons” behind Martino’s decision to leave before the end of his contract.
The club announced that Martino would hold a press conference on Friday, where he will be joined by club co-owner Jorge Mas and President of Football Operations Raúl Sanllehí.
Martino’s managerial career has been marked by significant achievements. He rose to prominence with Paraguay, leading their national team to a runners-up finish in the 2011 Copa América.
After a successful stint at Newell’s Old Boys in Argentina, he managed Barcelona during the 2013-14 season. He subsequently spent two years in charge of the Argentina national team before taking the helm at Atlanta United in 2016, where he won the MLS Cup in 2018.
Martino later managed Mexico’s national team from 2019 until November 2022, further solidifying his reputation as a top-tier manager.
