Isak nets goal as Newcastle defeat Spurs to extend winning run

Alexander Isak extended his impressive scoring streak as Newcastle came from behind to secure a 3-1 victory over Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham, extending their winning run across all competitions to six matches.

Tottenham, who were in excellent form heading into Saturday’s Premier League match, took an early lead just three minutes in when Pedro Porro’s cross was headed in by Dominic Solanke.

However, Newcastle responded swiftly, with Anthony Gordon equalizing just two minutes later by firing a low shot past Spurs’ debutant goalkeeper Brandon Austin, in front of England manager Thomas Tuchel.

Isak missed a chance shortly after the half-hour mark, dragging a cross from Jacob Murphy wide. But he made no mistake moments later, scoring after Radu Dragusin deflected another Murphy cross into his path.

With that goal, Isak became the third Newcastle player to score in seven consecutive Premier League matches, joining Alan Shearer (1996) and Joe Willock (2021).

Spurs showed improvement in the second half and nearly equalized 10 minutes in, but Brennan Johnson’s shot hit the woodwork after Martin Dubravka had saved Pape Sarr’s long-range effort.

James Maddison’s curling shot narrowly missed the far post, and Sergio Reguilon also fired off target late on.

Despite their efforts, Spurs were unable to recover, suffering their fifth home league defeat of the season under Postecoglou.

Magpies flying high

Just over a month ago, Newcastle managed only one attempt on goal, none of which were on target, in a disappointing 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace.

Fast forward five weeks, and Eddie Howe’s side now appear unstoppable, having scored 18 goals and conceded just two during a six-match winning streak.

The Magpies responded excellently to Solanke’s early goal and could have been ahead by halftime, with Isak, Gordon, and Joelinton all coming close to scoring.

Isak’s goal marked his 13th in the league this season, his 12th in as many Premier League appearances. The 25-year-old has now scored six times against Spurs in the Premier League, more than any other team.

Similar to their 2-0 win over Manchester United on Monday, Newcastle’s second-half strategy shifted to a more defensive approach, focusing on protecting their lead.

Dutch center-back Sven Botman, in his first appearance since March 2024, played a solid role at the heart of defense before being replaced by Lloyd Kelly during added time.

This victory secures Newcastle’s position in fifth place, which could prove enough to earn them a spot in the Champions League for the 2025-26 season.
