Joelinton may have played last Newcastle game – Howe

Manager Eddie Howe suggests that the game against Newcastle United could potentially be the final appearance for Brazil midfielder Joelinton.

After undergoing surgery for a thigh injury, the 27-year-old is set to be sidelined until May.

With Joelinton’s contract expiring in 2025, Newcastle is facing pressure to adhere to the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

“He has 18 months left on his contract so it’s a possibility he’ll be sold in the summer,” said Howe.

“I’m not a fortune teller but it’s a possibility. I hope that’s not the case. I want him to stay. I love him as a person and player.

“But before a player signs a contract he has to be happy with everything and we are not there yet.”

Having arrived at Newcastle in a £40 million transfer from Hoffenheim in 2019, the 27-year-old Joelinton has earned five caps for Brazil.

In the current season, he has featured in 20 matches across all competitions, finding the net three times.

Newcastle’s obligation to adhere to the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), formerly known as Financial Fair Play, has led to speculations about potential exits for players like Joelinton and Almiron this month.

Callum Wilson, signed by United from Bournemouth for £20 million in 2020, has 18 months remaining on his current contract.

“He’s got big ambitions and we want to keep him here but some things are out of our control,” said Howe of Wilson.

“The club is acting with the long-term interests of the club and they have to. Let’s see what happens.”

Kieran Trippier has attracted interest from German giants Bayern Munich, with the 33-year-old also out of contract in 2025.

“We hope he will stay and we’re very confident he will be part of our long-term future,” said Howe.

“But I have to make it clear, he has never asked to leave or even questioned his future here. We’ve had conversations in the last week and it’s always been about Newcastle. It’s important I make that clear. His commitment to Newcastle shouldn’t be questioned.

“It’s a huge compliment that a club like Bayern Munich are interested.”
