Juventus reach agreement with Aston Villa for Luiz

Juventus has announced that they’ve reached an agreement with Aston Villa regarding a deal for Douglas Luiz.

The transfer of the 23-year-old midfielder entails Juventus’ Enzo Barrenechea and Samuel Iling-Junior moving to Villa Park as part of the deal.

According to reports, Juventus will pay approximately 50 million euros (£42.3 million) for Luiz, while Villa will receive 22 million euros (£18.5 million) for the two players moving in the opposite direction, with an additional 3 million euros (£2.5 million) tied to bonuses, as stated by the club.

Luiz is scheduled to undergo a medical examination while attending a training camp with Brazil next week, as stated in a Juventus statement.

Initially, Weston McKennie was part of the negotiations, but the wages of the United States international posed a challenge at the beginning of the week, making it ultimately unfeasible to finalize the deal.

Argentine Barrenechea was relegated from Serie A last season while on loan at Frosinone and has featured in five games for Juventus. On the other hand, England Under-21 international Iling-Junior, who emerged from Chelsea’s academy, made 27 appearances for Juve last season.

In addition, Aston Villa Women’s Switzerland striker Alisha Lehmann will also be transferring to Juventus.

Villa is expected to sell players this summer to adhere to profit and sustainability (PSR) regulations, given their reported loss of £119 million in their accounts up to 31 May 2023.

Already, Villa has sold midfielder Tim Iroegbunam to Everton for a reported £9 million, and Chelsea is close to signing attacking midfielder Omari Kellyman for a reported £19 million.

This expectation arises despite Villa’s qualification for the Champions League after finishing fourth last season.

It’s worth noting that Villa voted against the introduction of PSR regulations, which came into effect in 2015-16, allowing Premier League clubs to incur losses of up to £105 million over a three-year period.
