Lennart Karl’s 99th-minute winner helped Bayern Munich complete a remarkable late comeback, extending their lead at the top of the Bundesliga to 12 points with a 3–2 victory over Freiburg.

Match Report

Tom Bischof scored twice as Vincent Kompany’s team recovered from a two-goal deficit at Europa-Park Stadion, but it was Karl who delivered the decisive moment to secure an important win.

Philipp Treu missed a major opportunity to put Freiburg ahead in the 15th minute, firing narrowly wide of Manuel Neuer’s left post from Niklas Beste’s cutback.

Bayern struggled to create chances for much of the first half but nearly went into the break ahead. Karl’s effort was saved by Noah Atubolu, while Bischof sent his attempt over the bar.

Freiburg took a deserved lead just 39 seconds into the second half, with Johan Manzambi curling a precise shot into the bottom-right corner, leaving Neuer with no chance.

Holer had a great opportunity to extend the lead in the 54th minute after forcing his way into the box, but he pulled his shot wide—though he later redeemed himself.

Beste delivered a dangerous corner that Neuer failed to clear, allowing Holer to convert from close range, with the ball taking a deflection off Kim Min-Jae before going in.

Bayern pulled one back through Bischof, whose long-range effort found the bottom-right corner. He then equalized in second-half stoppage time, placing a similar shot into the opposite corner with his weaker foot.

The drama continued late on as Joshua Kimmich set up Alphonso Davies, whose cross found Karl for a simple finish that sparked celebrations among the away supporters.

**Data Debrief: The late, late, late show**

Bayern looked on course for only their second league loss of the season when they trailed by two goals in the 71st minute, but Kompany’s side demonstrated their resilience.

They have now earned 22 points from losing positions in the Bundesliga this season—more than any other team—though they leaned heavily on their squad depth, particularly Michael Olise, to turn things around.

Olise assisted Bischof’s second goal, marking his 18th league assist of the season. He also led the team in final-third passes (28) and crosses (three), despite only entering the game in the 56th minute.

In a lively contest, Bayern outperformed Freiburg in expected goals (xG), recording 2.8 from 21 shots compared to Freiburg’s 1.82 from 13 attempts. The win provides a significant confidence boost ahead of their Champions League quarter-final first leg against Real Madrid.
