Late Taylor header snatches victory for Ipswich against Wolves
Jack Taylor’s dramatic header in the 93rd minute secured a vital win for Ipswich at Molineux, increasing the pressure on Wolves manager Gary O’Neil.
The substitute’s last-gasp goal handed Ipswich their second win of the season and sparked tensions on the pitch between both teams at the final whistle.
Matheus Cunha had appeared to salvage a point for Wolves after an own goal from Matt Doherty had given Ipswich the lead. Following the match, Cunha and Rayan Ait-Nouri were involved in heated exchanges with Ipswich players and staff, while home supporters directed their frustrations at the club’s owners, Fosun.
Although O’Neil received support from chairman Jeff Shi earlier this week, an 11th defeat in 16 Premier League matches has left the manager in a precarious position. Wolves, now second from the bottom, are three points behind Ipswich and four from safety.
Ipswich, in 18th, are a point behind Crystal Palace, who will face Brighton on Sunday.
Kieran McKenna’s side came close to extending their lead through Wes Burns and Liam Delap after taking full advantage of a stroke of luck for their 15th-minute opener. Delap’s cross caused chaos, and Doherty cleared Omari Hutchinson’s goal-bound shot off the line, only for the ball to ricochet off him into his own net moments later.
The atmosphere at Molineux soured quickly, with chants against Fosun and Shi intensifying, continuing into the second half.
Wolves’ issues have deepened under the owners’ reduced spending on players, with O’Neil pointing out after Monday’s 2-1 loss at West Ham that £200m worth of talent had been sold in the past 18 months. The team’s struggles predate the manager’s arrival.
Jean-Ricner Bellegarde and Jorgen Strand Larsen missed Wolves’ best chances before Cunha equalized with 18 minutes left, drilling in a goal from Goncalo Guedes’ pass.
Strand Larsen came close again seven minutes from time, and Cunha was denied by Ipswich goalkeeper Arijanet Muric.
But in stoppage time, Taylor headed in Jack Clarke’s corner, handing Ipswich a dramatic 2-1 victory and marking the 20th time this season Wolves have conceded from a set piece.
