Manchester United forward Greenwood set for Marseille medical

Mason Greenwood is set to undergo a medical before completing a permanent transfer from Manchester United to Marseille.

Sources indicate that Greenwood has agreed to personal terms, with a transfer fee, including add-ons, exceeding 30 million euros (£25.2m). The contract is expected to run until 2029. United have also secured what they consider a significant sell-on clause.

Marseille faced criticism from the city mayor last week when their intentions to sign Greenwood became known. However, they remain undeterred, and Greenwood is now expected to join Roberto de Zerbi’s squad for the upcoming season.

Greenwood has not played for Manchester United since January 2022. Serious charges against him, including attempted rape and assault, were dropped in February 2023.

United sources said that the 22-year-old briefly met with senior club officials last week, who confirmed the club’s decision to sell him.

Manchester United has also added Netherlands forward Joshua Zirkzee to their squad this month, with the transfer fee for Greenwood helping to ease the club’s ‘tight’ financial situation as they aim to comply with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations.

Greenwood is set to replace Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who recently announced his departure from the Ligue 1 side on social media.

“Merci Marseille,” Aubameyang wrote on Instagram. “It’s time for me to start a new chapter.”

The 35-year-old former Arsenal and Chelsea striker is set to join Saudi Pro League club Al-Qadisiyah.
