Maresca retains board backing at Chelsea

Chelsea have reportedly made a decision on Enzo Maresca’s future despite the team’s recent struggles.

On Saturday, the Blues suffered a second straight Premier League defeat, falling 3-1 to Brighton and Hove Albion at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea had taken the lead in the 24th minute through Enzo Fernandez, but their momentum collapsed after Trevoh Chalobah was sent off eight minutes into the second half.

Brighton capitalised, with Danny Welbeck scoring twice and Maxime De Cuyper adding another to seal the win.

The result leaves Chelsea in eighth place, seven points behind league leaders Liverpool. It also means Maresca’s side are winless in their last three league matches, following a loss to Manchester United and a draw with Brentford.

With fans voicing their frustration, the Chelsea boss is under growing pressure to turn the tide.

Still, reports suggest Maresca continues to have the full backing of the club’s board.

According to The Telegraph, Chelsea are not planning to review Maresca’s position until the end of the 2025/26 season.

The outlet added: “Maresca retains the backing of Behdad Eghbali (Co-controlling owner) and the sporting directors, who are not panicking over the team’s mini-slump.”

Chelsea’s targets for this season are reportedly a top-four finish in the league and a respectable cup run.

Maresca had also faced pressure last season during a dip in results but eventually delivered the Europa Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup titles.

After the Brighton defeat, he said: *”It’s a tough one as we were in control of the game, we scored one and could’ve scored more.

“Everything was fine. Then, because of our mistake with the red card, the plan completely changed. So, for me, we played two games: the one in the first half and then, unfortunately, another after the red card.”*

Chelsea will aim to bounce back when they host Benfica, managed by former Blues coach Jose Mourinho, in Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League clash at Stamford Bridge.
