Brian Brobbey scored a dramatic 90th-minute winner as Sunderland rallied from behind to defeat Newcastle United in a thrilling Tyne-Wear derby at St James’ Park.
Match Report
Sunderland claimed the bragging rights in the Tyne-Wear derby as Brian Brobbey grabbed a 2-1 victory over Newcastle United at St. James’ Park.
The Black Cats have now completed the double over their fiercest rivals in the Premier League in 2025-26, with Brobbey poking in the decisive goal in the 90th minute.
Newcastle made the brighter start, with Anthony Elanga heading over inside the opening three minutes, before Sunderland handed the hosts the lead.
Luke O’Nien’s short pass inside his own box was cut out by Nick Woltemade, who set up Anthony Gordon to round his marker and fire a low shot into the bottom-left corner.
Chemsdine Talbi then forced Ramsdale into a sharp save at the other end, while Sven Botman hit the post with a header shortly before half-time.
Sunderland began the second half on the front foot, and Talbi pulled them level in the 57th minute, converting the rebound after Habib Diarra’s close-range shot had been cleared off the line.
Malick Thiaw later had a header ruled out at the other end after Jacob Murphy, in an offside position, interfered with Melker Ellborg with 15 minutes to play.
Brobbey then seized his moment late on, nudging home at the second attempt to seal a comeback win.
Data Debrief: Sunderland impress with comeback
Sunderland are now unbeaten in their last six away league matches against Newcastle (W4 D2), extending their longest run on the road in this fixture’s league history.
Timed at 89:45, Brobbey’s strike was the latest winning goal ever scored in a Premier League meeting between the two sides.
Sunderland have now collected 19 points from losing positions this season, while Newcastle have surrendered 22 after going ahead, capping another miserable derby day.
Eddie Howe became the first Newcastle manager ever to lose each of his first two league games against Sunderland, while Regis Le Bris is only the second Black Cats boss to win both of his first two, after Gus Poyet in 2013-14.
