Bayern Munich’s £12.8 million (15 million euros) bid for right-back Kieran Trippier has been rejected by Newcastle United.

The 33-year-old English international, who joined Newcastle United for £12 million from Atletico Madrid in January 2022, marked the club’s first acquisition following their Saudi Arabian-backed takeover and under the management of Eddie Howe.

Kieran Trippier, the former Burnley and Spurs defender, has amassed 62 Premier League appearances for the Magpies and has frequently captained Howe’s squad this season.

Newcastle’s chief executive, Darren Eales, recently indicated that the club might need to offload players to adhere to the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations.

Striker Callum Wilson has been linked with a potential move to AC Milan, while winger Miguel Almiron is reportedly a target for Saudi Pro League side Al-Shabab.

Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich are actively pursuing the acquisition of a right-back during the January transfer window.

They secured the services of England defender Eric Dier on loan from Tottenham for the remainder of the season, reuniting him with former teammate Harry Kane, who, like Trippier, had previously played alongside them at Spurs.

Trippier, boasting 46 caps for England, has featured in all but two of Newcastle’s 21 Premier League matches this season, contributing to Eddie Howe’s side’s 10th position in the league standings.

Throughout the season, Newcastle has faced challenges with several key players being sidelined due to injury or illness, with nine first-team members currently unavailable.

On Tuesday, the club announced that midfielder Joelinton underwent surgery for a thigh injury sustained during the FA Cup victory over Sunderland on 6 January.

The 27-year-old Brazil international is anticipated to make a return to action in May.
