Newcastle whip Leicester as Van Nistelrooy suffers first loss
Newcastle ended a four-game winless streak in the Premier League with an impressive victory, handing new Leicester manager Ruud van Nistelrooy his first defeat.
The Magpies dominated the first half and took the lead through Jacob Murphy, who, after squandering two earlier chances, found the net with a low shot into the corner following a clever corner routine.
Alexander Isak’s one-on-one effort was saved by Leicester goalkeeper Mads Hermansen, but Newcastle stayed on the attack in the second half, extending their lead to 3-0 within five minutes of the restart.
Bruno Guimaraes scored with a close-range header from another well-executed set-piece, and Isak added a second, heading in after Conor Coady deflected Lewis Hall’s cross into his path.
Murphy fired over the bar shortly after, and Isak’s side-footed shot was saved by Danny Ward, who had replaced Hermansen at halftime. However, Murphy finally made it 4-0 with a low drive past the substitute keeper.
Newcastle could have added more, with Sandro Tonali firing into the side-netting and former Leicester forward Harvey Barnes curling a shot wide.
The win lifted Newcastle to 11th in the standings, while Leicester remained in 16th, just two points above the relegation zone.
