The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is poised to introduce Finidi George as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles in Abuja on Monday.

Notable figures expected at the unveiling include Nigeria’s Minister of Sports Development, John Owan Enoh, along with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Tinuke Watti, as well as the President of the NFF, Ibrahim Musa Gusau, and the General Secretary of the football body, Mohammed Sanusi.

Finidi, who turned down an opportunity to coach a second-tier team in Spain to return to Nigeria and lead two-time CAF Champions League winners Enyimba FC, clinched the Nigeria elite division title with the People’s Elephant in his second season. He has left the club in contention for retaining the title this season, with six matches remaining.

Upon his departure from the Aba giants, Enyimba FC maintained their third-place position on the NPFL log, with 53 points from 32 matches, trailing table-toppers Enugu Rangers by four points and second-placed Remo Stars by three.

The 52-year-old served as an assistant to Portuguese José Peseiro for 20 months starting from the summer of 2022. During his tenure, the Super Eagles secured qualification for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and reached the final, narrowly missing out on a fourth African title in Cote d’Ivoire three months ago.

Finidi, a former international with 62 caps for Nigeria at the senior level, boasts an illustrious career, including winning gold, silver, and bronze at the Africa Cup of Nations and participating in two FIFA World Cup finals.

His immediate task involves securing maximum points from the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa (home) and Benin Republic (away) in the coming weeks.
