O’Reilly brace lifts Manchester City past Newcastle United in title race

Manchester City edged Newcastle United 2–1 in a tense encounter, with Nico O’Reilly scoring twice to bring City within two points of leaders Arsenal in the gripping Premier League title race.

Pep Guardiola has downplayed City’s title prospects for much of the campaign, but their recent surge suggests they are firmly in contention and could push the race to the final weeks of the season. They are currently the only side on a winning streak longer than one match, a run that has erased a nine-point gap to Arsenal, who face Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

O’Reilly struck twice in a frantic 13-minute spell in the first half, with a deflected effort from Lewis Hall in between providing Newcastle’s response. Hall’s goal was the visitors’ first league strike at the Etihad Stadium since 2018. However, Eddie Howe’s team struggled to create clear chances after the break and failed to register a shot on target in the second half.

Anthony Gordon and Joe Willock tested Gianluigi Donnarumma, but the City goalkeeper was rarely troubled as Newcastle’s expected goals tally remained below 0.4. At the other end, City could have extended their advantage but were repeatedly denied by Nick Pope. The result keeps their championship ambitions firmly alive.
