Reason behind Bassey’s bench role since AFCON return – Silva

Fulham head coach Marco Silva has clarified why Calvin Bassey has struggled for minutes since returning from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Bassey has been one of Fulham’s standout performers over the last two seasons and was even voted the club’s best player last term.

Earlier in the current campaign, the defender impressed while forming a solid centre-back partnership with Joachim Andersen.

He later joined Nigeria’s Super Eagles for the AFCON, where he delivered a series of strong performances.

Although there were concerns that his absence would negatively affect the team, Fulham instead enjoyed an encouraging run of results.

Jorge Cuenca, who stepped in during Bassey’s absence, performed admirably and quickly built a good understanding with Andersen.

Despite Cuenca’s fine form, many expected Bassey to regain his place in the starting lineup upon returning from international duty.

However, that has not happened, with the Nigerian yet to start a match for the London side since his return.

In the first game he was available for — against Brighton — Bassey spent the entire 90 minutes on the bench.

He then featured briefly against Manchester United last weekend, playing only five minutes.

Bassey’s lack of game time has sparked debate, prompting Silva to address the situation during a recent press conference.

While praising Bassey’s ability, Silva explained that Cuenca has kept his place due to his consistently strong performances.

He also emphasized that keeping the current setup helps promote healthy competition within the squad.

“It’s a great thing for the team. I am the first one praising Calvin’s impact at the club, a great, great centre back. Huge potential to keep growing,” Silva said (via freelance reporter with Fulham Jack Kelly).

“Cuenca has stepped in and shown his qualities. It’s a competition, Cuenca knows the pro he’s up against.”

Fulham face Everton next at Craven Cottage on Sunday, though it remains unclear whether Silva will continue with Cuenca or recall Bassey to the starting back four.
