Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has made history by appearing in a record sixth European Championship.
The 39-year-old forward was in the starting lineup for his team’s Group F opener against the Czech Republic in Germany on Tuesday.
Ronaldo’s international teammate, Pepe, also started the match. At 41 years and 113 days old, he became the oldest player in Euros history.
Before the 2024 tournament, Ronaldo already held the records for most goals (14) and most appearances (25) in European Championship history.
He has now become the first player to participate in six separate Euros, a streak that began in 2004.
Ahead of the game at Leipzig’s Red Bull Arena, Ronaldo’s teammate Ruben Dias praised his continued contribution to the team.
“Cristiano represents the idea that it’s possible to dream and achieve great things,” said the Manchester City defender.
“It’s a pleasure to have him with us. Beyond all those little big things I’ve mentioned, it’s important that he’s here with us at this stage of his career.”
