Salah left out of Egypt squad for friendly tournament
Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah will not be part of Egypt’s squad for an upcoming friendly tournament later this month.
Salah has only made two substitute appearances for Liverpool since January 1st, as he has been recovering from a hamstring injury sustained during the Africa Cup of Nations, followed by muscle fatigue.
Although Liverpool requested that the 31-year-old be excused from participating in the tournament in the UAE, Salah was initially included in Egypt’s provisional squad. However, he has ultimately not been named in their final 25-man squad.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said previously: “Two games with Egypt is really not up to me, it is discussed with other departments.
“We want to be careful, we have to be careful, but we’re in the middle of a super-intense period of the season and we need everyone.”
Egypt granted Salah permission to return to his club for rehabilitation in January, with the intention of rejoining their Africa Cup of Nations campaign. However, the Pharaohs were eliminated in the last 16.
He made a scoring appearance as a substitute in Liverpool’s victory over Brentford on February 17th. Yet, Klopp subsequently stated that Salah required additional time for recovery. Salah made another comeback during Thursday’s Europa League triumph against Sparta Prague.
During the upcoming international break, the inaugural Winsunited Cup will be held, and Egypt is scheduled to play two matches in Abu Dhabi between March 22nd and 26th, facing New Zealand and then either Croatia or Tunisia.
Despite his recent absences, Salah continues to lead as Liverpool’s top scorer this season, tallying 19 goals in all competitions.
