Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of Italy international midfielder Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United, with the 26-year-old set to wear the No. 16 shirt after the move, subject to a work permit.

Speaking after completing the transfer, Tonali said he had no doubts about joining Spurs despite reports linking him with other clubs.

“I’m very happy to be here. When I arrived at the Club today, it felt fantastic. People said about there being four or five clubs – there was only one.

“I spoke to the Head Coach for close to two hours about the Club, the fans, the stadium and our football. It was like magic because I knew immediately that I had to sign for Tottenham. I’ve played against Tottenham a few times and always found a great atmosphere made by great fans. I can’t wait to start the season.”

Tonali arrives in North London after two seasons with Newcastle United, where he established himself as one of the Premier League’s standout midfielders. During his spell at St James’ Park, he made 110 appearances, scored 10 goals and helped the club win the 2025 Carabao Cup, ending Newcastle’s 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy.

Born in Lodi, Italy, Tonali developed through the youth systems of Lombardia Uno and Piacenza before joining Brescia. He broke into the senior team in 2017 and quickly became one of Serie B’s brightest talents, winning the league’s Player of the Season award in consecutive campaigns while helping Brescia secure promotion to Serie A.

His impressive performances earned him a move to AC Milan in 2020, initially on loan before the deal became permanent. During his three-year stay with the Rossoneri, Tonali made 130 appearances, scored seven goals and played a key role in the club’s 2021/22 Serie A title-winning campaign. He also featured prominently in the UEFA Champions League, including Milan’s run to the semi-finals in the 2022/23 season.

On the international stage, Tonali has represented Italy at youth level before making his senior debut in 2019. He has since earned 32 caps and scored four goals for the Azzurri.

Tottenham described the midfielder as a creative, energetic and combative presence in midfield and welcomed him to the club as preparations continue for the new season.
