Fulham edged Aston Villa 1-0, with Ryan Sessegnon’s goal condemning Villa to a disappointing defeat.

Match Report: Fulham strengthened their push for European qualification after a first-half strike from Ryan Sessegnon secured a 1-0 victory over a poor Aston Villa side at Craven Cottage.

It was just Fulham’s second win in their last six Premier League matches, and while inconsistency remains a concern for Marco Silva’s team, they showed their quality in ideal conditions and in front of an energetic home crowd.

The decisive moment came late in the first half. Emiliano Martinez reacted well to deny Sasa Lukic’s header, but Villa failed to deal with the danger, allowing Sessegnon to pounce and fire the ball through Ezri Konsa on the line.

Villa were largely responsible for their own struggles, delivering a below-par performance throughout. They have now failed to record consecutive league wins since their eight-match winning run ended in December, a worrying trend that continues despite their strong position in the race for Champions League qualification.

Their attacking threat was minimal, with only two first-half chances through Morgan Rogers and Ollie Watkins, and little to show in the second half.

There may have been some distraction ahead of their Europa League semi-final first leg against Nottingham Forest, and Unai Emery’s late substitutions hinted at possible squad rotation. However, they will need a far sharper performance to keep their European ambitions alive.

The first half itself lacked quality, with Raúl Jiménez heading straight at Martinez from close range and Emiliano Buendía missing a good opportunity after a quick counterattack.

Sasa Lukic also failed to capitalise on a loose ball at the edge of the box, while Rogers summed up the half-hour of wasteful attacking with a wayward effort into the stands.

Rogers did, however, show glimpses of quality later, weaving through Fulham’s defence before narrowly missing the target.

Watkins also came close, holding off Joachim Andersen before firing just wide as he looked to impress England manager Thomas Tuchel.

Fulham eventually took the lead two minutes before half-time. Timothy Castagne delivered a cross from the right, Lukic’s header was parried by Martinez, and Sessegnon reacted quickest to smash the rebound into an empty net.

Villa showed little response after the break, with Watkins firing over from a promising position shortly after the hour mark.

Fulham thought they had doubled their lead when Castagne headed in from a corner, but the goal was ruled out for a foul on Martinez.

Emery made four late changes in an attempt to spark a comeback, but with key players withdrawn, Villa appeared to already be looking ahead to their European fixture.

Despite the changes, Villa failed to create any meaningful chances, as Fulham comfortably saw out the win without serious threat.
