Sheff Utd reclaim top spot with point at West Brom
West Bromwich Albion, known for their draws, shared the spoils for an incredible 10th time in 11 games as they drew 2-2 with Sheffield United at The Hawthorns.
Although the Blades secured a point, it was enough to lift them back above Leeds United to the top of the Championship table.
In heavy rain in the Black Country, the Baggies took an early lead through Torbjorn Heggem’s header, but were quickly pulled back as Sheffield United scored twice in two minutes through Callum O’Hare and Tyrese Campbell.
Unlike many of Albion’s previous drawn home games this season—six in their first eight games—this match proved to be a more thrilling encounter.
Albion managed to earn a deserved but somewhat lucky point when Tom Fellows’ 62nd-minute cross was deflected in.
The game began comfortably for Albion, who took a well-deserved early lead. Heggem’s header from Alex Mowatt’s inswinging right-wing corner marked the summer signing’s first goal for the club.
However, the Blades quickly responded with two goals in quick succession, both created by winger Harrison Burrows.
First, Burrows’ low cross ricocheted off two Albion defenders, falling into the path of O’Hare, who stabbed it home as goalkeeper Alex Palmer failed to react.
Then, when the Blades spread the ball wide again, Burrows found too much space and delivered a pinpoint cross, which Campbell converted for his sixth goal in eight games. The summer signing, allowed to leave Stoke City at the end of last season, continued his fine form.
But in the second half, as Storm Darragh continued to rage, Albion enjoyed a huge stroke of luck. Fellows’ attempted cross from the right corner of the box deflected off Gus Hamer and looped over Sheffield United goalkeeper Michael Cooper’s head into the top-left corner.
