Manchester United are close to finalising the appointment of a caretaker manager for the remainder of the season, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer set to hold in-person discussions over a possible return to the club on Saturday.
It is understood that former United midfielder and ex-Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick, who is also in contention for the role, has already held talks with senior club officials.
United are keen to make an appointment before next weekend’s Manchester derby.
Sources at the club indicate that both Solskjaer and Carrick are viewed as head coaches in their own right, rather than temporary members of a coaching team, despite having worked together after Jose Mourinho’s exit in 2018.
Solskjaer was previously handed the managerial job under similar circumstances following Mourinho’s departure and was confirmed as permanent manager in March 2019 after an impressive run of results.
During his tenure, the former striker guided United to the Europa League final before being dismissed in November 2021 following a downturn in performances. His most recent role was with Turkish side Besiktas, where he was sacked in August after failing to progress in the Europa and Conference League play-offs.
For now, Darren Fletcher will remain in interim charge as the club concludes its decision-making process.
