In a major copyright enforcement action, YouTube has removed the video for ‘Different Pattern,’ a hit song by Seyi Vibez.
The move followed the use of unauthorised samples in the song’s opening segment.
The intro of ‘Different Pattern’ draws from the works of two late Nigerian music icons — highlife legend Orlando Owoh and Apala pioneer Musiliu Haruna Ishola.
The track was one of the standout records on Vibez’s EP ‘NAHAMciaga,’ released in December 2023. The project went viral and reportedly ranked among Nigeria’s most-streamed songs in 2024.
The takedown occurred in the early hours of today, with the official video removed from YouTube.
The copyright claim specifically referenced the unauthorised use of material belonging to Owoh.
It is noteworthy that ‘Different Pattern’ was released under Vibez’s former record label, Dapper Music, which the singer officially exited in September 2024 to run his independent label, Vibez INC.
Seyi Vibez has become widely known for building his sound around samples from classic Nigerian music, fusing them with contemporary street culture.
On his earlier project ‘Billion Dollar Baby,’ he notably sampled gospel singer Sola Allyson’s ‘Eji Owuro’.
This latest incident underscores the ongoing friction between modern sampling culture and copyright regulations in the digital music space.
Owoh, who passed away in 2008, was a revered bandleader and highlife great, while Ishola — widely regarded as the father of Apala music — died in 1983 and was famed for albums such as ‘Oroki Social Club’.
As of the time of filing this report, neither Vibez nor his team has issued an official statement on the takedown.
