Sports Minister Enoh applauds Para Powerlifter Nworgu on winning silver

The Minister of Sports Development, John Enoh, has congratulated Esther Nworgu for winning the silver medal in the women’s up to 41kg powerlifting event at the ongoing Paralympic Games in Paris, France.

Nworgu set two new Paralympic records with her final attempts at the gold medal but was narrowly beaten by China’s Zhe Cui, who set a new record of 119kg.

In a statement released on Wednesday by the Minister’s Special Assistant, Diana-Mary Nsan, Enoh praised Nworgu’s achievement, calling it “heart-warming, historic, and inspiring.”

“It is with immense pride that, on behalf of our dear President, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and sports-loving Nigerians, I congratulate Esther Nworgu on her silver-winning heroics at the Paralympic Games,” Enoh said. “This well-deserved victory, especially after the disappointment of the Olympic Games, is not only heartwarming but uplifting.”

Enoh expressed gratitude to Nworgu for lifting the nation’s spirits through her patriotism, hard work, and embodiment of the resilient Nigerian spirit.

He also acknowledged Mariam Eniola Bolaji, who won Nigeria’s first medal at the Games and made history as the first African player, male or female, to win a badminton medal at either the Olympics or Paralympics. Enoh said both athletes are a source of pride and inspiration.

“My sincere hope is that your performance will inspire other athletes yet to compete in their respective events to strive for gold and secure their place among Nigeria’s sports legends. The government and people of Nigeria are fully behind you as you go for Paralympic glory,” Enoh added.

“Once again, thank you, Esther Nworgu, for making us proud and lifting the spirit of the nation.”
