Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has called for an end to the “stupid rumours” surrounding his future, although he acknowledges uncertainty about whether he and his staff will remain at the club next season.
Pochettino, 52, initially agreed to a two-year contract with an additional optional year when he joined last May. Despite this, Chelsea’s season has been marked by inconsistency, compounded by injuries to key players and the challenges of leading a young squad.
Since the Clearlake ownership group assumed control in May 2022, Chelsea has invested heavily in the squad in three of the last four transfer windows, spending over £1bn on new signings.
The club’s leadership still anticipates qualifying for European competition next season, a goal that Pochettino can still fulfill.
Additionally, there is recognition from the club’s upper management of the challenges Pochettino faced this season due to not having access to his entire squad because of injuries.
“I wanted to say that it is enough with this type of rumours, that if I have one year more [under] contract here and no-one says nothing [to me], [I] suppose I’m going to be here,” Pochettino said.
“Only if then, the season finishes and someone says to me ‘ciao’… Because we don’t know at the moment. I suppose that I have one more year contract and that I am going to be here. Enough about the stupid rumours.
“You need to ask the club if they want me to keep going or not, not to write things that have no sense.”
